One of the first skills new parents learn is how to burp a newborn.
During feeding, babies often swallow air along with milk. Burping helps release that trapped air, which may reduce discomfort and make your baby feel more comfortable.
When Should You Burp Your Baby?
Many parents burp their baby:
๐ผ During a feeding (especially after switching breasts or halfway through a bottle)
๐ผ After the feeding is finished
Every baby is different. Some burp easily, while others need a little more time.
Three Simple Burping Positions
1. Over Your Shoulder
Hold your baby against your chest with their chin resting on your shoulder. Support the head and neck, then gently rub or pat the back.
2. Sitting on Your Lap
Sit your baby upright on your lap while supporting the chin and chest (not the throat). Gently rub or pat the back.
3. Face Down Across Your Lap
Lay your baby across your lap with the head slightly higher than the chest. Support the head and gently rub or pat the back.
A Few Helpful Tips
โ Stay patient if the burp doesn't come right away.
โ Keep a burp cloth nearby.
โ Always support your baby's head and neck.
